The Hidden Cost of Digital Child Labor

The Senior Thesis project for the Arizona State University Visual Communication Design program is a culmination of work that allows students to examine a social issue, and increase awareness through visual interpretation. I chose to focus on the commercial exploitation of children on social media platforms, or digital child labor. Through extensive research, ideation, and prototyping, a clock design is developed. The timepiece is titled exploit, to call attention to the often hidden exploitation of children who’s lives are broadcast online, without their consent. The design of the clock highlights that child-centered social media content receives three times the engagement of other online genres.

The timepiece was displayed and auctioned at the Arizona State University Visual Communication Design 15th Annual Poster Show, a fundraiser supporting the yearly senior student exhibition.
